Colleen has been with the Family Development Center since 2006. She began as the Administrative Director and was promoted to the Executive Director position in June 2020. She also supervises the Newborn Network and Child Care Network for the Family Development Center. She holds a BS in Labor and Industrial Relations, Human Resource Management, from Pennsylvania State University and continues to be a Nittany Lion fan!
She moved to Steamboat 26 years ago for a break after graduation and has been here ever since. Colleen ran a Human Resources Consulting business, Viable Resources, for 15 years that specialized in temporary employment visas and working with small businesses before moving into the early childhood education sector.
She and her husband Josh have two children, Zach and Maggie, both attending the University of Colorado in Boulder, and both are DLC alumni, along with their rambunctious 5-year-old Australian Shepherd “puppy”, Koda. When she is not working, Colleen enjoys being outside skiing, hiking, biking, or anything with her family. Feel free to email or call her with any questions!
Stephanie joined the Family Development Center team as Associate Director in January 2020. Before moving from Alabama to Colorado, Stephanie was a preschool teacher while earning her Bachelor of Science in Human Development and Family Studies at Auburn University and a Master of Science in Early Childhood Education (ECE) from Jacksonville State University.
Stephanie moved to Steamboat in 2002 and became an adjunct instructor for Colorado Mountain College’s ECE Program and teaches ECE classes for Colorado Northwestern Community College. Stephanie completed the Buell Early Childhood Leadership Program in 2019.
After 14 years working with Routt County’s early childhood programs and providers through First Impressions, Stephanie is excited to be in the role of Director of DLC, leading Discovery’s children, staff, and families. For fun, Stephanie enjoys spending time with family and friends, traveling with her husband, reading with her cat, and outdoor activities.
PreK-West Lead Classroom Teacher
Matt grew up in Colorado Springs with 3 older brothers. He holds a Bachelor’s in Exercise Science and is a credentialed Early Childhood Teacher. Matt began with Discovery in 2019 and we are excited for him to take on the Lead Teacher role in the PreKindergarten West classroom. Matt has lived in Thailand, New Zealand, and China over a 3-year span. He loves hockey, winter, and skiing.
Sarah Lynn Farmer

Sarah Lynn received a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Sociology at CU and completed her Master’s at Western Michigan University in School Counseling. She is continuing her education in Early Childhood Education (ECE) at Colorado Mountain College. Sarah Lynn grew up skiing in Steamboat, moved here 7 years ago, and recently married a longtime Steamboat local. She en- joys helping children build their self-confidence and guiding them as they explore and discover the world around them. In her free time, Sarah Lynn enjoys camping, hiking, and exploring Colorado with her husband.
Victoria (Tori) Nickles
PreK-West Classroom Assistant Teacher
Tori graduated with honors from Southern Oregon University in 2010, majoring in Anthropology (focus in archaeology) and minoring in Art History. She continues to pursue personal educational growth through community college classes, online instruction, summer training congress, and personal exploration. She is the middle of three amazing sisters, the daughter of two wonderfully supportive parents, and the spouse of one beautiful man. Tori loves to draw, write, sing, dance, act, bake and read.
PreK-Corner Lead Classroom Teacher
This is John’s 14th year at Discovery Learning Center. He started his adventure in Early Childhood Education (ECE) after his daughter Grace was born, (who is now in high school!). He holds a Colorado Early Childhood Credential Level IV and an AA degree in ECE. John is currently working on completing his Bachelors in ECE. John and his wife Dianna moved to Steamboat Springs in 1998 to take advantage of all the outdoor activities. He is an avid camping and biking enthusiast & loves traveling with his family. Some of their adventures have led them to Switzerland, Germany, Ecuador, and the Galapagos Islands!
PreK-Corner Classroom Teacher
This is Sheryl’s second year of teaching at Discovery Learning Center. Sheryl has been in the teach- ing profession for 11 years. “Teaching and helping others learn and grow is something I always have a passion for.” Born and raised in the Philippines, she received a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education at Mountain View College, Philippines. She has taught ESL and elementary mathematics in the Philippines and Thailand. She started working in Early Childhood Education when she relocated to the US. In her spare time, Sheryl enjoys camping, going for walks, hiking, road trips, traveling, and taking naps.
PreK-Corner Classroom Assistant Teacher
Sarah Wilson grew up in Western CO and attended CMC in Steamboat before pursuing degrees at CU Boulder. Her family returned to the Steamboat area 2 years ago and couldn’t be happier to be back and to be a part of such an amazing school. Discovery has a special place in her heart as her son Paxton attended school here. She enjoys being able to watch all the students grow and learn. Sarah is looking forward to the new school year and getting to know the families and students better.
Preschool Classroom Lead
Angela has been working with children since she was a teenager. She earned her Child Devel- opment Associate in order to pursue her passion of teaching young children and is Director Qual- ified. She loves watching children grow and learn and feels lucky to be a part of your child’s and his/her family’s life. Angela has been a teacher with Discovery for the past 4 years.
Preschool Classroom Teacher
After graduating from Middlebury College in spring 2019 with a BA in Environmental Policy and German, Alice moved to Clark and had her first experience in Early Childhood Education. She quickly realized she loved working with kids, wanted to pursue ECE further and combine it with her other interests.
After a nine-month stint living and working in Anchorage, Alaska, Alice is happy to be back in Steamboat here at Discovery. Her favorite part of the job is facilitating children’s exploration of their outdoor environment. She feels proud when they learn what nature provides for them and how it works. In her free time, Alice loves doing crosswords, cooking, hiking, and riding her bike. She is also an avid log roller in search of log rolling buddies here in Routt County!
Roving Classroom Assistant Teacher
Diane earned a Bachelor of Science with a Social Work emphasis from Colorado State University. Her first job after graduating was working as a preschool teacher. Diane brings years of experience in social work and counseling. She enjoys learning from Discovery Learning Center’s teaching team and increasing her skills in Early Childhood Education.
Roving Classroom Art Teacher
Katrina has been teaching at Discovery since it was a lab school for Colorado Mountain College in the early ’80s. She has a Colorado Early Childhood Credential and Director Certification. Katrina is a real Steamboat native, born here. She loves to spend time with her niece who started her Freshmen year at CU and her nephew when he is home from college. In her free time, Katrina likes to hike around Steamboat and Rocky Mountain National Park, and going to Blackhawk, Disneyworld, and Arizona for baseball spring training.
